In Lynwood, California, a fatal officer-involved shooting took place on the 105 Freeway, which was captured on video and is now under investigation by the California Department of Justice. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently released additional information about the incident.

According to the CHP, the officer, who was seen shooting the man in the video, stated that during a struggle in the middle of the roadway, the man had used a Taser against him. This led the officer to fear for his safety and ultimately fire his weapon, resulting in the man’s death.

The incident began when reports were received about a man walking on the westbound 105 Freeway near Wilmington Avenue around 3:15 p.m. on Sunday. The man was observed walking in the roadway, wearing headphones, and engaged in a phone conversation. An officer arrived at the scene at 3:27 p.m. and attempted to persuade the pedestrian to leave the traffic lanes. Despite the officer’s efforts, the man refused.

To ensure safety, other officers halted traffic while one officer directly approached the man on the freeway. Social media videos depict the officer and the individual engaged in a struggle on the ground within the lanes. It is during this encounter that the officer drew his firearm and discharged multiple rounds, striking the man.

According to the CHP’s statement, the pedestrian was able to access a Taser he had in his possession during the struggle. Subsequently, he activated the weapon and used it against the officer. In response to this threat and out of fear for his own safety, the officer fired his service weapon.

The pedestrian was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. As investigations continue, the westbound 105 Freeway remained closed for a significant period of time.

In accordance with standard department policy, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave while the incident undergoes investigation by the state Department of Justice.
